A chance meeting, and a little vintage inspiration, created photographic ooo-la-la at Annie Laurie’s Antiques.
Misty Dowd Davis found her perfect subject behind the counter of a local grocery store. “She was so beautiful that I instantly wanted to capture her beauty with my camera,” says Davis. “Actually going through with it was another story. I’m not one to walk up to people and ask to shoot them, so I didn’t get her name and she didn’t have a name tag on, so I didn’t even know who she was.”
But the more Davis thought about it, the more she felt compelled to photograph the girl from the grocery store, whose name turned out to be Hayley. Davis, a mom of three who is also the mastermind behind kids clothing line Lily Anna Kids, teamed up with Mousse Salon and Spa in Jackson for hair and makeup for the photo shoot and gained a second subject — the salon owner’s daughter also volunteered for the shoot.
“Hayley has such an timeless beauty that I knew I wanted the shoot to be old Hollywood or vintage themed,” says Davis. “Of course when I started trying to think of a place to shoot at that would go with that theme, Annie Laurie’s came to mind. Laurie was gracious enough to let us shoot there and I think everything just came together beautifully! I couldn’t have found a more fitting place.”
Davis says she loves using vintage accessories and props on her photo shoots because it adds such a timeless appeal, if it’s done right. “Each piece has such history, so much possibility,” she says. “A touch of vintage adds a little mystery to each image as it takes the viewers mind back in time to a place that most of us know nothing about, where we have to imagine what it was like to live in that time period or about who owned it previously and where all it might have been.”
“Each piece is unique and wonderfully mysterious. The perfect combination for an intriguing image,” she says.
